India is a signatory to Brasilia declaration, so it is committed to reducing the number of road accidents. Causes of accidents a. Maximum accidents are recorded on non- highway roads. b. The present system of contract Driven road building – this reduces the accountability of people involved in building of road. C. Speed bumps cause maximum number of accident. What should be done to reduce road accidents a. There is a need to set up model driving training institute in States and refresher training to drivers of heavy motor vehicle in the unorganised sector. This can reduce the cases of accident to a very large extent. b. Scientific traffic management and monitoring are essential to ensure road safety and efficient use of road space. C. People should be educated about the fatal consequences of “drink and drive”. Government of India has already approved the national road safety policy. It out line spaces policy measures such as promoting awareness establishing road safety. What is most needed is its proper implementation and the scope for corruption should be minimised.
